Description
Hypertension is one of the major cardiovascular risk factors; and diabetes mellitus is another of the most important determinants of vascular damage and cardiac events in the long-term.
The association of both conditions repçresents a serious public health problem worldwide. The so-called metabolic syndrome, that combines the manifestations of both diseases in addition to other factors such as obesity and dyslipidemia, represents a real epidemics in developed countries, associated to a sedentary lifestyle and dietary habits including abundant saturated fats and refined sugars.
The relation between hypertension and diabetes mellitus is complex, the harmful effects of both conditions are enhanced as regards renal damage and the cardiovascular risk. Studies have shown that hypertension clearly aggravates the progression of diabetic nephropathy, and that diabetic patients who develop concomitant hypertension have twice as much the risk for severe cardiovascular events as non-hypertensive diabetics. These data conclusively reflect the need for early detection of this group of doubly affected patients, for the purpose of establishing adequate treatment and reducing the morbidity and mortality associated with cardiovascular events.
